The GMC Canyon: Midsize Design With Big Capabilities

As you’re exploring different pre-owned GMC trucks, the Canyon is the perfect place to start since it has so much to offer and is ideal for a lot of folks we know. For starters, this is a midsize pickup. If you’re looking for a work truck that can haul a trailer full of drywall, you might check out the Sierra models instead. A lot of people don’t need that kind of power, however, which makes the Canyon the perfect choice to get you around town and handle what you’re looking for. This terrific daily driver has a lot to offer, while its midsize design makes it easy to fit into just about any lifestyle.

When the Canyon was first introduced for the 2004 model year, it was more of a compact truck than the midsize model we have today. It was around for a single generation through 2012. Then GMC gave it a break for a couple of years while they redesigned it and made numerous updates inside and out. When the Canyon returned for the 2015 model year, it was a midsize truck, and its larger size has remained pretty consistent ever since. This is important to keep in mind if you find older Canyon models, although we don’t suggest going with a first-generation Canyon unless you’re a collector or shopping on an incredibly tight budget.

You’re much better off with a late second-generation GMC Canyon or one from its third generation to get more recent features and options. In particular, look for a model from 2021 if you want to get a second-generation Canyon. That year, it received a refresh and update, including an off-road-focused AT4 trim and other enhancements. Up through the 2022 model, numerous engines were available, including a standard 200-hp I-4 and an available turbo-diesel. Starting with the third generation and the 2023 model year, the Canyon features a standard 310-hp turbocharged engine, making this an amazing one to look for while shopping for a used truck. When properly equipped, the Canyon can top out at more than 7,000 lbs of towing and around 1,600 lbs of payload, so keep that in mind.

The GMC Sierra 1500: The Perfect Full-Size Truck

If you’re looking for something larger, with more muscle and greater capabilities than the Canyon, then you need to check out the GMC Sierra 1500. This is a full-size, light-duty truck and the cornerstone of GMC’s pickup lineup because of its robust engineering and fantastic features inside and out. GMC has offered the Sierra 1500 since the 1990s, which means a huge number of used models are out there. We wouldn’t recommend going that far back, however, so you’ll want to stick to trucks from the current generation to get the best that GMC has to offer.

The current fifth-generation Sierra 1500 has been around since the 2019 model year. While you can go with a late fourth-generation model from just before that, we suggest a 2019 or later Sierra 1500 for the best features. This gives you access to an incredible selection of trucks that deliver big performance and fantastic capabilities, making them ideal for getting some serious work done. If you go with a 2020 Sierra 1500, for example, you can find the standard 285-hp V6 engine, an upgraded 6.2L V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, or a Duramax turbo-diesel that gives you a tremendous amount of muscle. A seven-inch infotainment screen is standard in the fifth-generation Sierra 1500, with an eight-inch screen available for 2020 models.

For some of the nicest features, you’ll want to check out the 2022 Sierra 1500, which received a facelift and refresh that year. This update includes a new 310-hp turbocharged standard engine, which is a fantastic pick, along with the available 6.2L V6 and turbo-diesel from previous years. You can also find an incredible 13.4-inch infotainment display in Sierra 1500 models from 2022 and later, along with a wide range of refined interior features to elevate your time on the road. When it comes to capabilities, a recent-year Sierra 1500 can handle more than 13,000 lbs of towing when properly equipped, with about 2,000 lbs of payload capacity to go with it.

The GMC Sierra HD: Power to Get the Job Done

Although there’s no denying the impressive capabilities of the Sierra 1500, you have a couple more remarkable options if you need a GMC truck that can do even more. The Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD are both full-size trucks that have a lot in common with the light-duty model, but they give you greater capabilities. One interesting thing to note is that generations for these HD models start about a year later than the Sierra 1500, giving GMC time to work out any bugs and refine various features. So while the fifth-generation Sierra 1500 launched for 2019 and was updated for the 2023 model, these Sierra HD trucks started their fifth generation with the 2020 model year and received a mid-generation refresh for 2024.

Both GMC Sierra HD trucks deliver incredible capabilities and robust performance, giving you a pickup that’s built to get some serious work done. There are fewer options in these models since they’re more purpose-built. For example, fifth-generation Sierra HD models only have two engines available: a 6.6L V8 gas engine or a Duramax V8 turbo-diesel. Similarly, you’ll find fewer options for cab sizes and bed lengths. These Sierra HD models still have remarkably refined and sophisticated interiors, which give you a truck you’ll enjoy driving.

Capabilities with these two trucks are superior to the Sierra 1500, although specifics depend on the engine you choose and other configuration options. A properly equipped Sierra 2500 HD from the fifth generation can handle more than 17,000 lbs of towing and more than 3,500 lbs of payload. The biggest boost to capabilities requires a Sierra 3500 HD with its available dual rear-wheel (DRW) setup, giving you incredible muscle for towing and payload. With a DRW configuration, a Sierra 3500 HD from recent years offers more than 30,000 lbs of gooseneck or fifth wheel towing and more than 7,000 lbs of payload when properly equipped.
